The diffusion bonding of tungsten carbide and steel offers new applications in the hot rolling field. The wear resistant tungsten carbide is only a part of a complete tool and is located in the SARACOM compound where it is most needed.

This newly created compound material has the following advantages:

roll rings

  • The working area of the SARACOM roll ring is made of high wear resistant tungsten carbide alloys with a binder content of 17-30%. This technology enables to choose the right tungsten carbide grade depending on the application of the ring in the rolling process.

  • There are hardly any limit to the mechanical clamping of the tungsten carbide rings to transmit the rolling torque. For specific applications, the SARACOM rolls are fitted out with keyways, wedges, threads or sharp edges in the steel part. Furthermore the compound roll ring can be hot shrunk on the shaft.

  • Due to the production process and the material combination the SARACOM compound system of tungsten carbide and steel is almost free from any residual stress. This essential advantage over other similar compound materials widens substantially the range of the applications for the wear resistant 12“-16“ rolls.

Manufacturing
The firm diffusion bonding between cemented carbide and steel parts is achieved by hot isostatic compacting at a temperature of 1100-1200°C. Then the compound rings are turned, finish machined and checked.

Applications
The conditions for the applications, the cooling and the machining of SARACOM-rings are the same as those known for the monobloc TC-rings.
